Conservationists

Sir,—A. K. Hepburn’s remarks (June 23) about conservationists are confused, misleading and illdirected. He claims to speak for a silent majority he presumes support his point of view and that of forestry proposals. Only the ballot box can do that. Regarding the future of mature podocarps and our indigenous forests which they in part represent, many people can only reflect on what they witness and know to be happening concerning the management of our native forests i.e. the disastrous effects the dubious practice of “selective logging” is having in some areas. Native forests evolved originally from a relatively protected environment, without presence of man, other mammals and fierce competition from exotic flora. The impact of these new pressures on our native forests will require much further scientific study and evaluation of their complex ecosystems to ensure their long term future.—Yours, etc., R. H. A. BURNETT. July 3, 1983.
