The homeless

Sir,—The recent report on the homeless in Christchurch provides survey evidence to confirm the worries that have been expressed by numerous social agencies. Emergency housing in the city is full and the placement of these families in affordable rental housing can take over three months. In the face of growing State house waiting lists in the urgent category, the Government has reduced the public rental housing stock by selling houses faster than they have been replaced. Because the number of beneficiaries is increasing it is essential that the housing stock is increased. The City Council is building more and reassessing its system of allocation for its small rental stock. But with rents in the private sector beyond the income of most beneficiaries, it is the Housing Corporation that should face up to its traditional responsibilities. — Yours, etc., Cr 0. J. ROWLANDS, Chairman, Community Services Committee. June 30, 1983.
