Protected natural areas

Sir,—At the request of the National Parks and Reserves Authority, the Biological Resources Centre (an inter-departmental unit within the D.S.I.R. administered by its own advisory committee) convened last December a scientific working party to consider how a more representative system of reserves could be achieved. Their report, “Protected Natural Areas for New Zealand,” calls for an urgent programme to expand the existing system of parks, reserves and sanctuaries to protect the full range of ecological diversity of our natural environment, because many of the important components are being irretrievably lost or depleted. New Zealand has been classified into 268 ecological districts to provide a basis for assess-

ing the present situation. Thus within the area of the North Canterbury National Park and Reserves Board there are 42 such districts, within the area of the Aorangi board 26 and for the West Coast Board 30. It is important for this protected natural areas programme to receive widespread support from ordinary New Zealanders. It should' serve to strengthen regional identity and awareness. — Yours, etc., ERIC BENNETT, Wellington. July 3, 1983.
