Clash looms

NZPA Hong Kong The Australian Foreign Affairs Minister, Mr Bill Hayden, and the American Secretary of State, Mr George Shultz, may be heading for a second big clash, this time over the A.N.Z.U.S. Treaty, when they meet in Washington later this month.

Statements by Mr Hayden that relationships between Australia and South-East Asian countries could eventually become more important than A.N.Z.U.S. come less than two weeks before a Ministerial review of the treaty gets underway. Mr Hayden and Mr Shultz have already engaged in one

bitter confrontation when they met in Bangkok for the Association of South-East Asian Nations Foreign Ministers summit meeting to discuss Australia’s plans to act as a peacemaker in Indo-China.

It became clear in Bangkok that the two men were not on friendly terms after Australian officials asserted that Mr Shultz had deliberately set out to undermine Mr Hayden’s peace mission. However, Mr Hayden won the public support of A.S.E.A.N. to pursue any moves to end the Indo-China conflict and the United States was forced to back this approval.
