Anti-hanging plea in Ulster

NZPA Belfast The Catholic bishops of Northern Ireland yesterday joined the campaign to prevent the reintroduction of hanging. After a week-end conference, the six bishops issued a statement appealing to members of Parliament to consider seriously the consequences of bringing back hanging. They believe that it would greatly exacerbate “an already explosive and dangerous situation” in Northern

Ireland. The bishops also demanded a ban on the use of plastic bullets in riots. They said that many people had been killed by plastic bullets and each death brought grief to the family of the victim and generated more resentment throughout the community. A powerful police lobby group has written to all British members of Parliament urging them to vote for a restoration of capital punishment for all types of murder.
