Club drops rule
Women will soon be able to become full members of the St Albans-Shirley Workingmen’s Club. A special meeting of the club on Monday voted to admit women members.
The president of the club, Mr C. Blakemore, said the decision would benefit the club. Husbands and wives could now be together at the club any night of the week.
He did not know how
many women planned to join the club or how long it would take to process their membership applications.
The club was the last of 12 Christchurch Workingmen’s clubs with yearly renewable charters to allow women to join.
The Workingmen’s clubs with non-renewable charters Richmond and Christchurch, still do not admit female members.
