Mr Mahon’s appeal opens
By
DIANA DEKKER,

The chairman of the Privy Council Board, Lord Diplock, said he had not seen “such an array of counsel” since 1948 during the opening of an appeal against a decision of the New Zealand Court of Appeal by the Mount Erebus Royal Commissioner, Mr Peter Mahon, in London yesterday. Mr Mahon appeals against a New Zealand Court of Appeal decision which led to his resignation as a High Court judge. The small public gallery in the
court was packed. Lord Diplock said the board had already read the decisions and reports connected with the case.
Sir Patrick Neill, Q.C., who opened for the appellant, said his submissions would be that there was ample material on the basis of which the commissioner could decide that false information had been given to him and second, that he was fully entitled to report that an attempt had been made to deceive him. Third, submissions would show that the commissioner had acted fairly.
