Old Boys on top
The High School Old Boys senior rugby side scored seven tries in beating a touring American team. Old Mission Beach Athletic Club, from San Diego, 38-4, at the Christchurch Boys’ High School grounds yesterday. Although the Californians played with a will to the end, Old Boys’ cohesive drive in the forwards and solid support for the ball carrier brought them many attacking chances. The visiting side was drawn from the club’s first and second grade sides, and the positioning on defence was often at fault. However, Mike Sanders, the left wing, who was the top player on the tour of New Zealand, Australia and Tahiti, got through a double share of cover defending. Sanders and the No. 8, Pete Deddeh, who has represented the Grizzlies, were prominent in all phases of play. For Old Boys, David Pool (2), John Laugeson, James Leggat, Glen Whisker, John Purdon and Richard Falloon tries; Falloon (3) and Leggat (2) conversions.
For Old Mission Beach: Kevin Gitre a try.
