Southland’s challenge

Greymouth reporter Two former All Blacks, Brian McKechnie, the captain and Leicester Rutledge, the vice-captain, will lead Southland in a South Island second division rugby championship match against West Coast at Rugby Park, Greymouth, this afternoon. The team for the game was announced yesterday morning, but does not include the present All Black, Steven Pokere.

Southland last played in Greymouth in 1956, a match West Coast won by 19 points to 14. Last year at Invercargill Southland won, 27-0. The Southland team for today’s match is: Brent McKenzie; Jim Cormack, Paul Laidlaw, Bruce Pascoe; John Chittock, Brian McKechnie; Chris Hiini; Bruce Robertson; Leicester Rutledge, Alan Byrne, Fergus Dermody, Paul Henderson; Alister King, Lex Chisholm, Paul Cosgrove.
