United draws Gisborne
Christchurch Mogal United will have to go the long way — and the hard way — to reach the semifinals of this season’s Adidas Chatham Cup soccer competition. Yesterday’s draw for the quarter-finals, to be played on the week-end of July 2324, coupled United with Gisborne City on the latter’s Childers Road ground.
Even so, the clash did not dismay United’s assistant coach, Terry Mann, after he heard the news. “Apart from having us away from home, it is not a bad draw at all. It could have been
much worse because there are stronger teams left in the last eight than Gisborne.
“Gisborne is not having a good season, and when we beat them here, 1-0, in a Rothmans League game last April, it was a dull, defensive side. I would have preferred playing Miramar or Napier, but I’ve no comElaints about it being Gisorne.”
Ironically, one of the Stators for the Unitedome clash will be the New Zealand international, Grant Turner, who left Christchurch for Gisborne
last week and is hoping to be transferred to the City club. It will be the final game of his three-match suspension for being sent off in United’s fixture with Manurewa 10 days ago. The other quarter-final matches are: Manurewa v. Mount Wellington (the clash of the round); Hanimex North Shore v. Napier City Rovers; and Dunedin City v. National Mutual Miramar. The New Zealand Football Association is considering playing the two Auckland games as a doubleheader at Mount Smart Stadium.
