Planned mission 'not independent’
PA Wellington The planned scientific mission to inspect France’s nuclear test site at Mururoa cannot be called independent, according to the Greenpeace organisation. It said that the French had managed to control what would be studied and what data would be given to the mission, which would be led by Mr Hugh Atkinson, director of the National Radiation Laboratory. No new lines of enquiry would be permitted and the scientists were to be chosen by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Greenpeace said. The organisation said “a true independent study” required impartial scientists not subject to political vetting and the latitude to investigate what it thought necessary. “The most important aspect of independence however, is independent data,” Greenpeace said.
