Scallop beds to be ‘seeded’
PA Nelson More than 10 million scallops will be “seeded” in part of Golden Bay this summer in a joint New ZealandJapan project, according to fisheries scientist, Dr Michael Bull, who will head the programme. The enterprise, expected to be done by the Ministry of Agriculture and Fisheries and the Overseas’ Fishery Co-operation ’ Foundation of Japan, would be part of a three-year trial to enhance depleted scallop stocks, Dr Bull said.
Seeding on this scale has never been carried out in
New Zealand before. The seeding will cover a 200 ha area.
Dr Bull, who spent three weeks last June studying scallop farming in Japan, said that the scallops would be ready for commercial harvesting in 2¥z years. “After we have seeded an area we will close it for two years and then open it for harvesting,” he said. “The method relies on the fact that although scallops usually produce large numbers of larvae each year, survival of juveniles during the first few months is frequently very low,”
