More infants learn Maori

PA Wellington The Education Department is preparing for an influx of thousands of Maori-speaking infants into primary schools over the next decade.

More than 1000 preschoolers are already attending kohanga reo (language “nests”) where supervisors speak to them only in Maori. Attendances could rise to about 3000 by the end of the year.

The Assistant DirectorGeneral of Education, Mr J. A. Ross, said the department’s district inspectors were collecting information on location of kohanga reo and numbers of children who would move on to primary schools. The department was looking forward to arrivals

from the kohanga reo who would bring a new dimension to schools, he said.

Teachers would encourage children to carry on with their language and he believed there would eventually be a steady flow of Maori speakers through the system. Mr Ross said the department had been involved in Maori education for many years. Already, about 54,000 primary school children were in Maori language and culture programmes. In addition, five primary schools, and 178 secondary schools provided full Maori language programmes. More than 1000 teachers, inspectors, and headmasters had been through intensive marae-based programmes on taha Maori (the Maori dimension).
