Apprentices return

PA Hamilton Two leading New Zealand apprentice jockeys, Peter Tims and “Baz” Dowling, returned from Australia yesterday and both will be riding at Te Rapa yesterday. Tims, with 61 wins, retains a handy lead in the apprentice premiership, in spite of having spent the last several weeks riding in Brisbane. Dowling has ridden 31 winners for the season so far, a very respectable total

considering he was out with injury for much of the summer. He has spent the last fortnight in Sydney riding for the Paul Sutherland stable as a replacement jockey for the former New Zealander, Bruce Compton. However, Compton has been able to resume riding while he awaits the outcome of his July 23 appeal against a six-month suspension imposed three weeks ago. If Compton fails in his appeal, Dowling will return to Sydney.
