Council initiates grants scheme

The Southern Regional Arts Council has decided to initiate a community grants scheme.

The council agreed at a meeting in Oamaru to set aside a sum from the projects budget specifically for distribution to applicants by community arts councils. The director of the council, Mr Brett Riley, said the scheme would enable community councils to approve applications of up to $5OO. Applications of more than that amount would still be considered by the regional council.

Community councils were still encouraged to apply for funding for their own projects from the regional council, said Mr Riley. The new scheme would give them greater responsibility in their communities, he said.

At the meeeting in Oamaru the following organisations were given grants: Malvern Community Arts Council, guarantee againsi a $l5O loss on a concert by the Scottish group, the McCalmans;

Southern Ballet Theatre, $2OOO for a visit by two dance choreographers, Michael Smither and Jamie Bull; Jubilate Singers, $2OO towards a commission by an Aucklander, David Hamilton; Early Music Society of Canterbury, $2OO towards a seminar on the baroque violin; North Canterbury Community Arts Council, guarantee against a $7OO loss on a festival week-end.
