Pricing of alcohol queried

PA Auckland The new chairman of the Alcoholic Liquor Advisory Council, Mr John Robertson, said yesterday that the Government should consider linking the price of alcohol to rises in the New Zealand consumers price index. Mr Robertson said such a pricing scheme was only one way the Government could hep to combat alcohol problems. “During the 1970 s the price of liquor did not keep up with the consumers price index,” he said. “In real terms it became cheaper, even though it did go up in price.” Mr Robertson said that linking the price to the index could be helpful in restraining any increase in consumption. “I would like to try to convince the Government that it should have an alcohol policy,” he said.
