Ohau ‘disaster’
Farmers in the inland Lake Ohau area have had their properties declared a local "disaster area” after heavy snowfalls last week. The eleven high country farms in the upper Ahuriru and Ohau gorge areas have suffered sheep losses from snow which fell last Wednesday.
The Ministry of Agriculture and Fisheries has labelled the area as a “disaster” so that it can pay a 50 per cent subsidy on helicopter and bulldozer fees.
A helicopter has been in the area since Saturday, when the weather cleared, helping farmers get to stock buried by deep drifts, and flying in extra manpower. One fanner, Mr Tony Aubrey, said he estimated stock losses to be about 10 per cent. Mr Aubrey said that the two properties at the top of the gorge had been the worst affected by the snow, which was almost Im deep around the homesteads. The stock which had suffered the most had been the ewes and hoggets, which could last for about a week at the most in the snow.
“We are lucky that we had a good autumn and the stock was in a good condi-
tion, but the dry summer meant that we have not got as much hay as usual," ne said. The senior farm advisor with the Ministry of Agriculture and Fisheries in Oamaru, Mr lan Warren, said that the snowfall was the worst since about 1968.
