Maths rated a plus for jobs

PA Auckland Pupils who drop mathematics at secondary school make themselves vulnerable to unemployment, according to the principal of the Auckland Technical Institute, Mr Ivan Moses. He told 220 ‘ secondary school principals at their annual conference in Auckland yesterday that an increasing proportion of jobs required mathematics as a prerequisite to training. The great majority of courses at Auckland Technical Institute insisted on it.

“They must have University Entance and maths, otherwise we don’t want

them,” he said. He also believed that as technology expanded in the future, maths would become even more important. Mr Moses said girls were more vulnerable to unemployment because fewer took maths. “Those of you who would want women to play a bigger part in this country should realise that your pupils are limiting their vocational opportunities by not taking maths.” Mr Moses said that teachers should also encourage students to take a wide range of subjects, rather than specialise at secondary school. _
