Selected player is ‘tickled pink’
Rob Smith has been playing senior hockey for 12 years and at 30 years of age was slowly giving up hope of playing for Canterbury. Smith, probably the most consistent full-back in club hockey in the last two years, was added to the Canterbury A squad yesterday by the selector-coach, Jim Bowden.
The captain of High School Old Boys, Smith has played for Canterbury B for the last two seasons. He said yesterday he had enjoyed playing for the B team, and was “tickled pink” at being selected for the A squad. Mr Bowden has also included the young Pegasus forward, John Radovonich, in the squad. The pair have been added to fill gaps left
by the selection of five Canterbury players in the New Zealand team to play in a Five Nations tournament in Kuala Lumpur next month. Those players will not return to New Zealand until the middle stages of the national tournament in Palmerston North where Canterbury will be defending the Challenge Shield. If Smith plays with the same coolness and confidence that has marked his club play this season he will be a valuable member of the team. Radovonich has shown increased maturity during the season and should slot easily into the team’s attack. Smith is the son of the former New Zealand representative, lan.
