Manly-Warringah extended its lead in the Sydney rugby league premiership to six points when it overpowered Eastern Suburbs, 40-18, last Sunday. All four of its nearest rivals before last week-end, Parramatta, Canterbury-Bankstown, Easts and North Sydney, suffered losses. The biggest upset was South Sydney’s 11-0 win over Parramatta. The series of unexpected results included a 26-22 victory for Balmain over Canterbury, allowing Balmain to slip into fourth position. Other scores: Illawarra 25, St George 24; Canberra 24, Western Suburbs 16; Newtown 17, Cronulla-Sutherland 10; Penrith 14, North Sydney 8. Points: Manly 32, Parammatta 26, Canterbury 24, Balmain 22, Easts 21, Norths 21, St George 19, Souths 17, Cronulla 16, Canberra 14, Penrith 14, Newtown 14, Wests 8, llawarra 8.
