Home heating
Sir, — A number of people in Christchurch lack adequate heating in their homes. For families on low, single incomes, unemployment or sickness benefits, the two or three hundred dollars needed for winter heating is unobtainable. Fit, active people, given adequate clothing and food, can manage with a minimum of home heating. Those with young children, invalids and those with inadequate diets cannot, and often must severely restrict their lives during the cold months. A few may even be at risk from hypthermia. Surely it is not beyond the generosity of ratepayers or the skill of City Council administrators to devise a scheme whereby home heating costs of those who are in real need can be adequately subsidised. — Yours, etc., G. A. LEICESTER. July 1, 1983.
