Paul Viggers beaten
Wellington
Rod Hayes maintained his stranglehold on the national men’s squash circuit yesterday in hitting his way to victory in the Wellington district championships final at the Khandallah club. Hayes, the top seed, displayed wonderful consistency, calm and some devastating touches on the volley to master the erratic brilliance of the fourth seeded Paul Viggers, of Sumner, 9-3, 3-9, 9-4, 9-7 in 58 minutes. This enabled Hayes to retain his Wellington title, and it was his fifth championship in six tournaments on this year’s Adidas national circuit. His vic-
tories include the rare feat of the North Island and South Island double. He now has 306 points. When Viggers produced a purple patch in the second game to win six. points in a
row it looked as though Hayes (Manurewa) might be thoroughly extended. Viggers though was unable to sustain his challenge. He was often guilty of making silly errors, particularly in the fourth game when after leading 7-4 Hayes roared home without the loss of a further point. Even in losing Viggers still looked worthy of a place in the New Zealand world championship squad of five, which will be named next week-end, es-
pecially with his closest challenger, Neven Barbour, not being able to play with quite his usual composure at Knandallah.
Robyn Blackwood, the top seed of North Shore, scored her fourth consecutive Wellington championship victory in beating the second seeded Joanne Williams (nee Milne) 91, 9-6, 9-7.
