Surprise cycling win
NZPA-Reuter Creteil, France
A late swoop by a Dutchman, Frits Pirard, gave him a surprise victory in the 159 km first stage of the Tour de France at Creteil just outside Paris yesterday. The field of 139 riders, including a New Zealander, Eric Mackenzie, caught the lone leader, Marc Madiot, of France, 400 metres from the
finish of the run from No-gent-Sur-Marne. It was then the 28-year-old Pirard made his move and he crossed the line with the pack a few metres behind.
Belgium’s Erik Vanderaerden snatched enough bonus points from the five mid-stage sprints to keep the over-all leader’s yellow shirt, which he won on Saturday by winning the time trial.
