Drama win to Villa Maria
Villa Maria College won first prize in the Bank of New Zealand high school drama competition on Saturday. The final of the week-long event, part of the Midwinter Razzle, was held at the State Trinity Centre. Villa Maria’s entry, “Habits,” from Drama Workshop Book V, drew considerable praise from the judge, Claire Marsh. All the finalists had put a lot of time and effort into their productions, she said.
Second place went to Christ’s College for its adaption of Wayne and Schuster’s classic, “Rinse the Blood Off My Toga.” St Andrew’s College A team was third, with Alan
Ayckburne’s “Ernie’s Incredible ‘lllucenations.” Non-prize awards were made to the St Andrew’s College junior team for the best set, Avonside Girls' High School for the most original script, St Bede’s College for the best stylisation, and Cashmere High School for best characterisation (the businessman).
Claire Marsh commended the entrants on their energy and total commitment and the Midwinter Razzle organisers, Barry Southam and Elizabeth O'Connor, for their initiative in organising the festival and getting 17 entries from 15 schools.
The event is expected to become an annual fixture, and a meeting will be held soon to discuss the format.
