Diana a keen swimmer
NZPA-Reuter Edmonton Princess Diana said yesterday she was a keen swimmer —■ and always beat Prince Charles when they raced in the pool. The Princess chatted about swimming with Dave Wilson, aged 22, a member of the United States swimming team, when the Royal couple met athletes competing in the World University Games. Wilson, of Cincinnati, Ohio, told reporters that the Princess had said that she liked to swim twice a day and added: “She said she beat her husband every day.” The Prince and Princess strolled through drizzling rain to meet the athletes. They were to attend the opening ceremony of the Games before flying back to London after a Canadian tour that began on June 14.
Today is the Princess’s twenty-second birthday. Officials said that she would be presented with a cake at the opening ceremony and serenaded by spectators singing “happy birthday.” Princess Diana also admitted that she was glad to get her corsets off after wearing a nineteenth century costume at a barbecue on Thursday in Edmonton. “The dress I wore was whalebone from throat to waist. It was nice to get out into a dress like this,” she told Mary Fargey, a member of the volleyball team which is taking part in the Games. The Princess was wearing a loose-fitting blue and white floral silk dress. To match her outfit the Princess was given a pair of trendy white sunglasses by athlete Sue Dunton, which she laughingly tried on.
