Storm rocks marina
A yacht tosses in the rough waters round the Magazine Bay marina at Lyttelton last evening. Owners of boats moored at the marina kept a close watch during yesterday’s stormy weather. One boat was holed and lines up to scm thick snapped, prompting a fresh wave of criticism about the marina's siting. Mr Peter Wilson, who lives aboard his 12m yacht at the marina, said that “gigantic” waves went straight through the breakwater. He has lived aboard boats for most of the last 10 years, and considers the Magazine Bay marina to be the worst he has seen. He said that during the day professionally fitted lines had failed, and a mooring fitting on a pile had come adrift. A winch was pulled off one boat. "A boat cannot take the constant strain,” he said.
