Auckland traffic officers to enforce noise law
PA Auckland The Auckland City Council has appointed its 96 traffic officers to enforce the new noise control regulations. But councillors have backed away from a challenge to appoint themselves noise control officers as well. Cr Marie Quinn said councillors should accept the responsibility themselves rather than “pass the buck” to the traffic department.
“I am prepared, as a councillor, to go out in the middle of the night,” she said. Cr Cath Tizard called on Mrs Quinn to publish her telephone number. “The only people we have trained to deal with circumstances of this type are our traffic officers,” she said. Cr Gordon Barnaby argued that the job was best left to council staff, rather than councillors, who could be subject to political pressure from residents.
