New group for stroke victims
A support group for young stroke victims has started in Christchurch. A founding member, Mrs Isabel Hignett, said it was for those leaving hospital who wanted support from others with similar problems but did not feel they belonged in existing stroke clubs, which catered mainly for older people. ■ She had joined such a club after having a stroke when her son was born three years ago. ■ "I felt very depressed being classed as a geriatric,” she said. ■ A social worker suggested starting the new group at 'the start of this year. It now has about 10 members who meet once a month in one another’s homes to talk about problems and facilities available to help them. No age limit applies to membership — the youngest member is in her mid-20s and the oldest an active 60 year old. The group now works with help from a member of the regional community mental health team, run by the North Canterbury Hospital Board.
