‘T.M.T.’ sexism

Sir,—We have observed the recent discussion on sexism on “The Mainland Touch.” It would be fallacious to think that this is the worst example of sexism on television. Far more offensive than this is the recent spate of Cadbury commercials championed by Bruce Forsythe and an anonymous blond person. This commercial portrays said person as the archetypal “dumb blond.” In the advertisement it is intimated that she would eat a radio (not even vaguely resembling a cake of chocolate) if the man had not so benevolently stopped her. This is sheer lunacy. Where is the Human Rights Commission when we need it? We would certainly appreciate a detailed explanation of why the degradation and exploitation of women is required to sell chocolate. Failing this we require no less than the removal of this offensive advertisement from our television screens.—Yours, etc., JANE VESTY, BRENT J. D. BURNEY, LINDA CLARK. June 29, 1983.
