Australian policy on Vietnam
Sir, — At the first sign of an independent foreign policy initiative from the new Australian Labour Government (towards Vietnam) the Americans, through their Secretary of State, Mr Shultz, have shown the same threatening, bullying attitude the Soviets show toward their satellites when they step out of line. Ostensibly, the American (and A.S.E.A.N. and European Allies) complete trade and aid embargo on Vietnam, imposed since 1978, is because Vietnam invaded Kampuchea and deposed the infamous Pol Pot. The real reason is vindictive spite stemming from defeat in Vietnam and American guilt over their secret and systematic two-year blanket bombing which destroyed neutral, rice-exporting Cambodia and turned it into the desert of death now called Kampuchea. — Yours, etc., M. T. MOORE. June 29, 1983.
