Students call in fraud squad
PA Auckland The Auckland University Students’ Association has asked the police fraud squad to investigate the disappearance of $30,000 from its funds. The acting president of the association, Ms Karen Bos, said the discrepancy was discovered when accounts were being prepared at the end of the 1982 financial year for the association’s autumn meeting. “We advised the students that we would be unable to •present the report because we had found serious material errors, and called in the auditors again,” she said. “After a lot of discussion, the executive reluctantly decided to call in the police as a precautionary measure, because we feel we have a responsibility to the students to take every step we can,” Ms Bos said. “It’s fairly likely that the money missing resulted from catering losses, because costs last year were a lot higher than we expected. “We also had a lot of
problems with information being lost during the installation of a computer system last year,” Ms Bos said. The association represents about 12,500 students, who each pay an annual fee of $52. Detectives were expected to meet association executives and solicitors, and the auditors, soon.
