I want to disappear—author
PA Wellington An Auckland author, Wendy Simons, says that she will use her $6OOO writer’s bursary to disappear for four months with a typewriter, dog, and car. “I can not think of anything I would rather do,” she said before being presented with the joint 1.C.1. and New Zealand Literary
Fund award at a ceremony at Wellington’s Turnbull House this week. Miss Simons said that the bursary would enable her to give up teaching and concentrate on her literary projects. These include a novel, a collection of short stories, and editing the journal of ninteenth century surveyor and explorer, Edward Jollie. Her first novel, “Harpers
Mother,” was written in 1977, followed by “Odd Woman Out” and “Naomi,” due for publication next month. The 1.C.1. bursary aims to help writers with potential but whose reputation is not yet well established. Previous winners have been Michael Heath, Russell Haley, David Hill, Ann de Roo, and Keri Hulme.
