Bus patronage increasing
Business is picking up on the new Railways Road Services bus run from Christchurch to Greymouth, via the Lewis Pass. When the trial service began on May 30, no passenger was carried beyond Hanmer Springs. Since then, the service has grown in popularity, and on one day 14 passengers travelled to points beyond Hanmer Springs.
The district manager of the Road Services, Christchurch, Mr Brian Larcomb, said that patronage had been better than expected. Woodend, Culverden, and Hanmer Springs were popular pick-up points, and freight loadings were also good. Mr Larcomb was optimistic that the service will be retained permanently.
