Race distances
Sir,—As one of the 1700 runners who competed in the City of Christchurch half marathon on June 5,1 am still awaiting a public apology for the chaos which occurred before and after the event. Serious athletes were upset by a 200rn switch of starting line a moment before the race began and distressed in having to run an extra 400 m in the form of three circuits of the Q.E. II stadium to finish the race. I have measured the course outside the stadium, finding it to be 20.5 km, while an estimate of four circuits within the stadium is Ikm. Clearly athletes ran in excess of 400 m beyond the
21.1 km distance they' had trained to run. It is no wonder so many runners were disappointed in their times and now have no idea of their exact performances. I call on the organiser to explain what happened to upset an otherwise excellent day. — Yours, etc., G. WALKER. June 15, 1983. [Mr A. A. P. Willy, chairman of the executive committee, Adidas City of Christchurch Marathon, replies: “The organising committee acknowledges the mix-up which occurred at the finish of the half marathon and has already apologised to all those runners who attended the post-race function for any inconvenience caused. A full explanation of the problem will appear in my chairman’s message in the result book which will shortly be forwarded to all entrants.”]
