Skeleton story rebutted

PA Dunedin A skeleton found in a grave in the Cromwell gorge is that of a European, not an American black, according to Associate Professor Philip Houghton, of the Otago Medical School’s anatomy department. The skeleton was a European man aged between 25 and 30, and 185cin tall. No injuries were obvious to determine how he died, Mr Houghton said. The skeleton may stay in the Otago Medical School if no relatives claim it.

According to folklore in the gorge district, the remains are those of an American black who drowned in the Clutha River last century. An archaeologist on the Upper Clutha development project, Mr Neville Ritchie, discovered the skeleton in an unidentified grave.
