Teacher grading gets support
The New Zealand School Committees’ federation supports the proposed assessment scheme for teachers. The national executive officer, Mr lan Powell, said the federation supported the proposal by the Minister of Education, Mr Wellington, as a basis for further discussion and negotiation. “This does not mean we support every single aspect of it, rather we see it as a positive initiative and catalyst which should stimulate further debate,” he said. The federation, which wanted to be consulted in the development of an assessment scheme, did not wish assessment to be equated with punishment. It would prepare a background paper on the proposal based on the views of the New Zealand Educational Institute, the Education Boards’ Association, jand its own members, said Mr Powell.
