Royal jet hits ramp

NZPA Edmonton A full inquiry was underway yesterday after an aircraft carrying the Prince and Princess of Wales struck a ramp, damaging a wing-tip. The Canadian Armed Forces Boeing 707 had just landed at Namao airport, Edmonton, and was taxi-ing towards the terminal when the port wing hit a stationary truck carrying steps. The air base commander, Colonel Peter de Tracey, and over 1000 well-wishers gathered to greet the Royal couple, watched in horror as the aircraft neared the ramp carrying the steps, and they tried to scream a warning.

The wing-tip was damaged and the top of the steps bent and twisted. Major Dick Adams, of the Department of National Defence, said: “it is very embarrassing for the base, and it is regrettable that it happened on such an important occasion.” There was no danger of explosion or fire. The aircraft, which is due to fly the Prince and Princess of Wales back to England tomorrow—the Princess’s birthday—would “have to be thoroughly overhauled before the flight takes place.”
