S.A. ban condemned

The renewed five-year ban on a South African nationalist, Mrs Winnie Mandela, has been condemned by a Christchurch priest, the Rev. Jim Consedine. Father Consedine, who twice visited Mrs Mandela in her remote home township of Brandfort in the Orange Free State last year, said the South African Government continued to pretend that reform was taking place when the country’s most promising black leaders were either banned,

in jail, or forced into exile. To be banned was to be under virtual house arrest, he said. Mrs Mandela had appealed to the New Zealand public last year to support sports boycotts and economic disinvestment in South Africa, said Father Consedine. He appealed to all members of the all Blacks, the Lions, and the sports journalists who had been invited to South Africa to stand with her in that plea. Ban details, page 6
