Sex education policy to remain

PA Wellington School principals and school boards have been warned by the Minister of Education, Mr Wellington, that there will be no changes to sex education provisions. In a letter accompanying the new draft health syllabus sent to schools this week, Mr Wellington tells principals, and board and committee chairmen, that he wants to make it absolutely clear there will be no changes in the sex education provisions. “Indeed, in the draft syllabus there is no provision for group or class instruction in sex education in primary and intermediate

schools,” Mr Wellington said. “I should add that while I am Minister of Education this position will stand and stand absolutely. In short, the decision I made in 1980 is made, fixed and final.” The health draft syllabus is being used as a discussion document, and schools have until August to submit comments on it. Since it has been circulated there has been a widespread push among education groups to get sex education introduced at an earlier level in schools.

A team of representatives of the Education Department and other groups have since 1980 been reviewing the health syllabus.
