Winter weather closes roads

Mid-winter weather affected several main roads in the South Island yesterday. Chains were advised on both Arthur’s Pass and the Lewis Pass, and care was essential at Paddy’s Bend, between Cass and Bealey on the Arthur’s Pass road, where workmen are still clearing a slip. State highway 8 at the Lindis Pass, State highway 7, from Outram to Middlemarch in Central Otago, and State highway 94, from Te Anau to Milford, were all closed by snow and ice last evening. Three Mile Hill Road, between Dunedin and the Taieri Plain, was also closed. It was snowing steadily on State highway 1, just north of Dunedin, but the road was open.
