Cycling classic

A bunch of 15 cyclists, riding off scratch, should ensure that there is no loitering in the Healing Waikari road race over 100 km round Hawarden on Saturday. The scratch riders, if they can make early contact could take line honours as well as fastest time. Murray Steele, who was first and fastest in the recent Allan Loach Memorial classic in Timaru. and Craig Adair, will be continuing their build-up for the world championships in Switzerland, in August. Also in the scratch bunch will be Blair Stockwell. Brian Fowler, Toni Horne, Chris Hogan and John Hughes. Denis King, of Nelson, who was second to finish

and in the fastest time in last year's race, is one of the 15 riders off smin. Seven juniors ride off that mark, and Philip Gibbs and Craig Fenton seem a likely pair to dispute junior time honours.

A notable entry among the early starters is that of Ross Bush. A top-class road cyclist in the 1960 s and early 19705. Bush returns after an absence of many vears.

Another rider off that mark. Glen Phipps, a Heal-ing-Papanui junior, has been showing promise. An open novice handicap race over 16km will also be held at Waikari.

Big entries have been received for both races; 92 cyclists race in the 100 km classic, and 44 compete in the novice event.
