Interest in meat issues

In spite of the interest in the shares of R. and W. Hellaby and Southland Frozen Meat, prices on New Zealand stock exchanges remained mixed yesterday. The surprise was that more than six million Hellaby shares traded at 145 c, 10c above the price offered by Canterbury Frozen Meat for a 24.9 per cent interest. As well, nearly 500,000 S.F.M. shares were sold, mostly at 305 c. Although the N.Z.U.C. index firmed 2.73 points to 824.13, market leaders were more prominent in the falls. Among issues to ease were Dominion Breweries, Fletcher Challenge, L. D. Nathan, and New Zealand Steel. East Coast Gas lost 3c of its recent gains and Lane’s Industries stood out on a fall of 15c.
