Ailing African jailed

NZPA-Reuter Cape Town An ailing 74-year-old African trade unionist said by a judge to have only a couple of years to live was jailed for five years yesterday on terrorism charges. Judge D. M. Williamson said that he would not have jailed Oscar Mpetha had he not been bound to do so by law. “Mpetha is old and very ill He is suffering from diabetes and its complications and is due to have a leg amputated. His life expectancy is limited and at best he has only a couple of yean, to live, even with the treatment,” he

said. He would have suspended the whole sentence were he not obliged by law to order the minimum five-year jail term for terrorism. The charges arose out of riots in an African township in the Cape nearly three years ago in which two Europeans died. Nine others who were convicted of murder and terrorism were given sentences ranging from seven to 20 years. The trial, which began 27 months ago, was one of the longest in South Africa. Seventeen Africans were charged with murder and terrorism. Seven were acquitted. w
