‘Driver of the event’

Brian Stokes’s gritty performance in the Sanyo Rally of New Zealand has reaped him the Dunlop “driver of the event” award. Stokes fought pain throughout the 2600 km event, as he had a steel plate holding together his right arm, which was broken by a kick from a cow a month ago. The young Waikuku farmer brought home his Escort 1600 in eleventh place and yesterday Dunlop announced that the selection panel felt that his brave performance had earned him the award, valued at $5OO. This will pay for the extra set of tyres that Stokes had to buy from Dunlop during the rally, as he found that his 16 spares were not enough.

This has been a good week for Stokes. The organiser of the Mainland rally series, Roger Moffat, announced that Stokes is the 1983 Mainland champion, as the last round of the series, the Nelson event, has been cancelled. Final series points.— Over all: Stokes 60, Barry Robinson (Wyndham) 52, Hugh Owen (Blenheim) 50, Carl Rabbidge (Timaru) 40, Alan Hewlett (Kumara) 35, Roger Townshend (Christchurch) 28. Under 1300 cu cm: Townshend 90, John Sergei (Chch) 62, Nigel Welsh (Edendale) 30. 1301-1600 cu cm: Stokes 80, Peter Johnson (Chch) 30, Mark Errington (Chch) 28. Over 1600: Owen 55, Robinson 52, Bruce Reid (Chch) 48.
