Audi appeals dismissed
PA Auckland A motorsnort court of appeal yesterday dismissed two of three appeals lodged by the Audi team on behalf of the Swedish driver, Stig Blomqvist, in respect of the international car rally which ended in Auckland on Wednesday. The Audi team had lodged a series of appeals to keep Blomqvist driving in the Sanyo event after a series of protests from Lancia and the initial indecision of the stewards. The court, chaired by Mr Justice Coates, dismissed two of the three appeals on techni-
cal grounds, saying they did not comply with international rules.
The third was overruled, the court stating Blomqvist’s entry should never have been accepted by the organisers, as it was lodged after the official closing date for entries.
The stewards were admonished for finally excluding Blomqvist from the rally on Sunday, at the start of the second leg. The court said that, as an appeal had been lodged, Blomqvist should have been allowed to continue competing.
