Chains needed
Chains are still essential on the Arthur’s Pass highway from Porters Pass to Otira, according to the Automobile Association (Canterbury). Eight centimetres of snow lay on the road at Lake Lyndon yesterday afternoon. The Lewis Pass was reported to be clear last evening, although it was raining hard.
The Lindis Pass, in Central Otago was closed at 4 p.m. yesterday after heavy snowfalls. It was not expected to be open until late this morning.
