General forecast: Mainly fine in the east from Gisborne to central Marlborough, and about Cook Strait and Nelson. Heavy showers still expected in western districts with some hail, and there should be further snow on the mountains, especially over the South Island. District forecasts: Canterbury: Fresh southwesterlies spreading north; cold and showery; further snow on the ranges. Nelson, Marlborough: Showers and isolated thunderstorms in the western ranges, but mainly fine elsewhere;

south-westerlies, fresh in exposed places.

Buller, Westland: Cloudy and cold, with occasional showers and some thunderstorms and hail; snow on the ranges.

Tomorrow: Occasional showers, but some fine periods on the West Coast.

Extended range forecast for the South Island for Saturday to Monday: Showers in many places on Saturday with snow to low levels on the hills. On Sunday, scattered showers in Eastern districts, but clearing elsewhere. Mainly fine and frosty on Monday.
