Oil, gas shares up
NZPA Sydney Price rises by oil and gas stocks lifted Australian Stock Markets in quiet trading yesterday. The all-ordinaries index
closed 0.3 points down at 603.8, with the all-industrial 2.2 points lower at 740.8, and the all-resources up 1.1 points at 493.2. Notable rises among oil and gas stocks were Santos, 20c to 670, Vamgas, 40c to 960, Crusader, 10c to 610, and Woodside, 5c to 120. In Sydney, base metals closed generally easier with CRA at 526, WMC at 443 and North Broken Hill 282, each recording losses of up to sc. E.Z. Industries added 10c to 600 and Bougainville edged upwards to 274 in Melbourne and 272 in Sydney. Gold stocks were mixed, with GMK 10c up at 1000 but Peko 10c down at 706. CSR closed 5c up at 395 but BHP was 10c lower at 810. Banks closed lower, with National 7c down at 295 in Melbourne. Among retailers, David Jones added 10c to 225, Coles rose 5c to 285, Woolworths lost 2c to 198, and Myer firmed 1c to 134 with 250,000 traded in Melbourne. Bond Corp was again active with 109,000 traded before closing at 89c. Brewers were firmer with Castlemaine-Tooheys up 5c at 410.
