Earth crack probe
PA Rotorua A team of D.S.I.R. scientists is in Taupo to monitor a spate of minor earthquakes and to investigate a crack which has appeared in farmland near Whakaito Bay, near Taupo. The tremors were first felt 10 days ago and about 50 have been recorded. The crack is about 3cm wide and was first noticed by a farmer, Mr A. D. Johnson, when he was checking his property. A Taupo geologist, Dr G. Grindley, said the crack followed the Kaiapoi faultline. It was about Ikm long and probably about Ikm
deep, he said. The earthquakes were not indicative of volcanic activity but were due to movements of the Earth’s crust. The officer in charge of the geophysics division at the Wairakei Geophysics Research Centre, Dr T. M. Hunt, said it was unusual that such a swarm of earthquakes had resulted in a large crack, but it was unlikely anything big would follow. One earthquake was felt in the area yesterday and others were reported near Atiamuri but Dr Hunt said it was impossible to predict how long the activity would last.
