Ski lift at Mt Hutt under repair
The Mount Hutt ski-field hopes to have its top T-bar back in action in about a week after storm damage by strong westerly gales earlier this week. The chairman of the Mount Hutt Ski Company, Mr Peter Yeoman, said that the T-bar lift’s five-tonne counterweight had begun swinging in the wind during Sunday or Monday and had badly damaged the lift terminal structure.
“New parts are being fabricated in Christchurch, but it will be early next week and subject to weather before they can be taken to the site and assembled and fitted,” Mr Yeoman said.
He said that the lift would also need a safety clearance from the wire rope manufacturer, and its builder, Doppelmayr, before it was used.
Mount Hutt’s buildings and lifts are fully insured against storm damage. Mr Yeoman said that the ski
lifts were built to withstand high winds and it was the first time that a lift had been damaged by winds on the ski-field.
The storm has, however, brought new snow to Mount Hutt but how much will not be known until the weather clears.
For some weeks Mount Hutt has been the only commercial ski-field open in the South Island, but after the snowfalls this week several others are expected to open tomorrow. Ironically the opening of one ski area, Lake Ohau, near Twizel, will be delayed because of an over-abund-ance of snow after what were described as the best falls there for many years.
The chairman of Lake Ohau Ski Area, Mr Paul Mortlock, said yesterday that there was about 90cm of snow in the car-park which would have to be moved by bulldozer. He expects the field to open on Friday, July 8.
